Local Comissions and Councils
Hi, all! I stumbled across this wonderful site while looking for a telephone number for the Durham Council for the Arts.
I've lived in the Durham Region for six years, and in the past two I've started doing a lot of artwork. for the most part I've shared it with a few friends over the Internet, made a few cards, and done a handful of comission pieces, often for people on the other side of the country, if not the other side of the world.
Recently, I've wanted to start showing my work locally, which is a sight harder a thing to get myself into. The advice from every artist I've talked to is to hunt down my local Arts comission and chat them up about local events, galleries and contests.
However, I have had a devil of a time sorting all of the information available here out. We seem to have both the larger Durham Council for the Arts, and a number of focussed and more localized groups such as the Oshawa Folk Arts Council, the Pine Ridge Arts Council, Whitby Arts inc... and of course the bigger galleries, like the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the Station Gallery seem to be entities in and of themselves in a way I've never seen before.
The DCA has been very hard to find any information on... it took me ages just to find their telephone number!!
How does a body go about finding someone (especially someone as broke as I am) who can point them in the right direction, help them find local venues, etc.?

I called John Arkelian with the Durham Council for the Arts on Friday, and found him amazingly helpful... he had so much information I was still reeling. I'm not exactly sure where I am going to start with it all, but he was kind enough to send me the most recent edition of Artsforum.
If nothing else, he's given me a good reason to get out and check out some local spots I might have otherwise missed.
I'm going to try and pop into the Oshawa Arts Association meeting tonight as well, and I'll post here about my impressions. Maybe I'll see some folks from hereabouts there!
