Durham Artists Social Network

A social network for artists, and their friends, in the Durham Region in Ontario

I would like to know what tricks of the trade everyone uses to get their painting done. Do you set a schedule? Do you paint whenever? Do you set aside a day. I would be interested to know what other artists do to accomplish their goals. Some of you who have been painting a long time could give us a few pointers.

Hi,
Time was when i would paint from 10PM to 5AM but now the rest of life gets in the way.
In reality lately, I've only painted when at the club, but I do keep my current painting in clear view and analyze as frequently as possible for adjustments and inspiration. Tonight, since all is calm and everyone else has retired forthe night, I'll probably go paint till 11PM-- Now I have early for me (a non-morning person) mornings, so I quietly hide my grump for a couple of hours.
coindidently, I've decided to try Whitby Galley studio on Mondays, starting tomorrow 10-3, maybe you could join us (costis a membership in the gallery $25 I think. Hope to see you, if not then see ya at the club.
Up until my full-time job was eliminated (May of this year), I would come home from work, have dinner and walk the dog, and then, if it wasn't my evening to have the kids (in a divorce situation), I would sit down and paint through to 1 a.m or so on a daily basis -- especially in an instance where I was preparaing for a show. I'm now in a severance payout through to next August and have the luxury of working ALL THE TIME on painting. I take the kids to school every weekday morning, then do a half hour of meditation, some flow yoga, have breakfast and do my internet chores, then it's into the studio and work through to 1 a.m. (when I don't have the kids). This was pretty standard through the last 6 months as I prepared for my recent show in Toronto. And at the moment I'm working flat out on a painting of the Toronto Maple Leaf captains that I want to get finished and have made into a set of limited edition prints in time for the Christmas shopping season. So, you might say, I'm pretty driven...:O))
Good topic Lynn -
I'm surprised you only paint at the club Margaret.
Allan you really ARE driven. But it's a good thing :)
I'm in the studio (3rd bedroom) every day. My routine is to get a cup of tea and head straight to the studio and turn on the computer and check the messages and peek into the Wet Canvas forum to see what's new then check the calendar to see if something is to be dropped off, picked up, deadline for juried forms, etc. I usually have a commission of some kind to work on and something else just for myself. On Wed. and Thurs. I'm usually at the club and depending on what I'm working on at home I don't always paint at the club. Sometimes I'm working on a very large piece that's just too complicated to drag over there, so I go for lunch and the company and head back to the studio.
Right now I have 2 commissions (one is actually a set of pen & ink drawings) and I'm also cutting some matts for some other work. I have some other ideas that I really want to get to but I do have to come out of the studio to do laundry, shopping, cooking and other domestic chores that somehow need to get done. My husband also likes to see my face occassionally :)
That about covers my days...........
See you at the club
Cheers
Sharon
Hi guys:
My routine is quite like Sharons. Whenever I get the chance I'm in my studio. I'm also on the computer quite abit and am addicted to Wet Canvas. I always paint at the club on wednesdays if I can, which is most wednesdays. I also move my paintings around the house as I'm working on them to critique them. I quite often will paint after supper till maybe 9:00pm then go downstairs to watch a favourite show, that I can't get on my little tv in my studio, then come up at 11:00pm and maybe work till 2:00am or later, then back up at 7:00am-7:30am and start all over.......
Cheryl
