Dave Zak, motion designer and entrepreneur

Life-long Ajax resident and multi-discipline artist, Dave Zak has decided that he will no longer make fine art to sell. Trying to make a living from his mixed media collages is just a bad model for art-making he declares. And, besides, it takes all the fun out of being creative. So, he figures he will just make his art pieces spontaneously and without any thought of displaying or selling them. And when the time comes when he has sufficient works for a show, it will simply be a celebration and a party – and if something sells that will be a bonus.

Luckily for him that, in spite of his relatively young age, he is firmly established as a multi-media advertising designer with an impressive long list of clients that includes Blackberry, Nike, Walmart, Chrysler and Bank of America for starters. He operates as art director for teams of copywriters, editors and designers who produce video promotions that are used online and in-store to promote products and services.

Zak’s post-secondary education began with multi-media design studies at Fanshawe College in London, then continued with a two-year course in animation at Durham College, Oshawa. And just ended with him completing a fine art degree at York University. All of this groundwork led him to practice what he calls “motion design”, the interweaving of disciplines as diverse as music, video, digital imagery, collage and painting into his commercial art and fine art products.

And not content with a solid advertising business and a burgeoning fine art career (he has shown in outdoor shows, restaurants and galleries and has numerous completed commissions to his credit), Dave Zak’s lively imagination has conjured up various related entrepreneurial interests including marketing a special line of the resin he uses on his art works and a book publishing enterprise. And, as well, he and his fiancée, artist Rebecca Codack, have followed their urge to involve themselves in social justice and environmental issues to establish websites and foundations to help raise awareness of causes dear to them.

But, mostly Zak loves to escape from the non-stop busyness of the work-a-day world into the freedom of making his unique multi-media collages. See some of these terrific art pieces and check out all of Zak’s enterprises at
