Durham Artists Social Network

A social network for artists, and their friends, in the Durham Region in Ontario

Social Networking in Addition to DASONET?

Getting new "Fans" is as easy as ever!

With the launch of my new website, I have been spending some time self-marketing and trying to network with other artists using some widely used social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to get my name "out there".

In a short time, I have started to see some early results, and I have made some new friends all over the world and contacts that will indeed inspire my work in the years to come. It is fabulous to be able to see others' work so easily and it is truly inspiring to see the creativity of my fellow artists.

For those who haven't yet joined Facebook, it is an easy way to start networking in general- not only with other artists, but maybe some friends from the past with whom you've lost touch over the years. If you have an email address, you can join.

If you're already a member of Facebook, consider creating yourself a "Fan Page" which allows people to see your work without being able to see your personal page (for anyone with privacy concerns). A Fan page simply allows people to become just that- your Fan- and whenever you post comments or your work, your fans see your post on their home page and can easily keep up with your progress.

Once you have created your Fan Page, it allows you to see statistics on the demographics on who is visiting your page, where they are in the world and how often. Creating a Fan page takes about 5 minutes if you are already a Facebook member, well worth the time. From your page, you can direct your fans to an album of your work, your blog or personal website.

Becoming "Fans" of others is equally simple. By clicking on the "Become a Fan" button on someone else's Fan page you instantly are able to follow their future posts, and view and comment on their online gallery on their page.

The other online tool I have found useful in networking is Twitter - an up-to-the-minute timeline of the thoughts and activities of the people you "follow". After joining Twitter, I joined a couple of artists groups called Twibes, where members can follow each other's work and activities through our Twitter posts. After a week, I have 13 followers and I have started making connections with people I would never have otherwise had the opportunity to share work with. Using Twitter is as simple as typing a quick note about what your doing or working on, and those who "follow" you can read your updates and comment on your posts. You can upload pics of your works in progress, or "Tweet" about anything that your heart desires. It's a lot of fun and interesting to be able to know what others doing and are working on.

In this economy selling our work is not easy, so I thought others might benefit from what I've discovered.
Networking has never been so easy, and I recommend everyone create their own Fan page.

Don't forget to post a link to your page on DASONET so we can follow and become "fans" of each other!
