Durham Artists Social Network

A social network for artists, and their friends, in the Durham Region in Ontario

I have not been on here, again, for a month or so. My part time job is now done till Sept. so I am working on commissions, a mural, and a couple small paintings to sell as well as 2 personal pieces.

I need to begin the portrait I intend to enter into 2009's The Kingston Prize. It will be of my son and his guitar.
Anyone interested in entering this great portrait competition/exhibition, just Google Kingston Prize. The subject of your work needs to be someone you know or who agreed to sit as the subject, but does not necessarily need to be done From Life.

Lately, I have contemplated looking into running a workshop on painting traditional portraits with acrylic. It would concentrate on techniques like working on a toned ground, scumbling/drybrushing and using blending fluid to extend the paint wetness to be able to blend well. I would be interested in hearing from anyone whether they'd feel this workshop would be something they, or someone they know would love to attend. Please Feel Free to comment here or Drop me an dEmail at chuck.jocelyn@sympatico.ca with your thoughts. As well, I also have had the idea to run a drawing class for highschool or youth, but not to disclude adults, on basic realistic drawing skills like values, lights, darks, shading with stroke build up, etc., Another idea I would Love imput on is if anyone would be interested in doign an open session Portrait Drawing or Painting day or evening ever. This is something I wish we had out here. My friend in Ottawa attends one every week and they get different models to pose for a portrait, often in an interesting outfit or hat too.
So, ideas I'd love anyone's imput or expressed interest in being part of, are as follows:

1. Traditional Painting with Acrylics/Emphasis on Portraits
2. Realistic Drawing Session/Class
3. Open Studio for Portraiture

Something I also will be doing this Summer is joining the Ajax Creative Arts!!! :-)
I've been in Ajax over 17 yrs and have not joined this organization. I will be popping in to register.

Have a good weekend all!!!!

Hi Lynn: Ok, great! Thank you. Once I finalize an acrylic workshop or class, I will make sure I contact you. It is something I want to do by the Fall at the latest.

Hi Jocelyn. We are having the Ajax Festival of the Arts on May 29, 30, and 31st. The Saturday might be a good time for you to drop in. We are open to the public from 9:00 A.M till 5:00P.M. We probably won't be setting up any Wednesday evening classes till after July. You could contact our workshop person, Judith Jewer. She is a member of Dasonet. I agree with Lynn. An acrylic portrait class would be super!

Oh, ok, great Don, thanks for letting me know! I saw registration for ACA is Sept too so I will check about that.
Sharon let me know about contacting Judith so I'll do that once I get registered as a member.
Weds are not good for me for classes as I play pool that night, in a league. I'll check into all that stuff with Judith.
Thanks for all the help!!!

Hi Jocelyn.
I could be interested in an acrylic portrait workshop. I have been trying to work with portraits in WC but I would be interested in seeing how you use acrylics. I have viewed your website and really appreciate the work you have shown there. Good to hear you are considering joning the ACA and a demonstration venue there might be a good choice.
Bob
